Steam: In spite of new VR glasses less VR users in October

Despite new VR glasses such as Rift S, Valve Index and Vive Cosmos, SteamVR users are downhill in October. During the year, PC-VR has achieved a small growth on Steam.

Valve publishes the results of Steam hardware survey October and with her fresh data for VR use on SteamVR. There were only minor shifts in the market share of VR glasses:

The big Rift S growth seems to be over for now, compared to September, it went from 13.03 in October only to 13.7 percent high. Also Valves VR glasses index has grazed the potential buyers for the time being and even gives slightly less than five percent SteamVR market share to 4.92 percent. The VR glasses were launched in May and June.

Users of Windows VR eyewear continue to shrink (5.87 % to 5.22 %), while Oculus Rift remains the most widely used VR eyewear at 35.18 percent, followed by HTC Vive at 33.07 Percent. In the duel of the successor models, however, Rift S (13.7 %, May 2019 release) is well ahead of HTC's Vive Pro (2.11 %, release March 2018).

Overall, there is not much in the VR goggles associated with SteamVR. Only Rift S has been able to grow well since May, but is now losing momentum. Picture: Screenshot

Less SteamVR users in October

More interesting than the slight shifts in the market shares of the individual VR eyewear manufacturers is the development of VR users on Steam in total. Here it went downhill in October: Compared to September 0.11 percent less Steam users had a VR glasses connected - which is estimated to nearly 100,000 users.

Although this is not a big decline, but at least an indication that the new VR glasses Valve Index, Rift S, Pimax and Vive Cosmos so far no or at least no significant PC-VR growth can trigger.

If many users had been waiting for the new generation of PC glasses before purchasing, it should actually go significantly uphill these months. However, the Christmas business is just around the corner.

Red numbers everywhere: October was not a successful month for SteamVR. Picture: Screenshot

Vive Cosmos is already listed in Steam statistics, but is still in the database with zero percent users. Meanwhile, the category "unknown" flew out of the statistics again, the numbers should have been split mainly on Valve Index and Rift S.

The following table translates the percentages from the Steam Hardware Survey into monthly active user counts on SteamVR. Serves as the underlying Valves statementthat about 90 million Steam users are active every month (as of October 2018).

According to statistics, 1.03 percent of SteamVR users had VR glasses in October, which corresponds to approximately 930,000 users. In September there were just over one million SteamVR users.
