SteamVR in September 2019: Rift S and Valve Index continue to increase

A look at the recent Steam Hardware Survey shows that the number of users of Oculus Rift S and Valve Index rose in September, to the detriment of other VR glasses.

The market share of Oculus Rift S rose to 13 percent, while the high-end VR glasses already scrape Valve Index at the 5 percent mark. The growth is no surprise: the VR goggles came out in May and June of this year.

This month, HTC Vive (almost three percent less), Windows Mixed Reality (more than two percent less) and Oculus Rift (more than one percent less) are losing weight. HTC Vive will go through in early October Vive Cosmos (all information) replaced, while in Oculus Rift in May with the successor Oculus Rift S happened. Windows Mixed Reality, however, is largely deregistered, including the high-resolution HP Reverb nothing should change.

Below is a tabular overview for the months of August and September 2019. It shows the percentage of VR glasses connected to the PC whose users participate in the Steam Hardware Survey. Users of other VR platforms such as the Oculus ecosystem and Viveport as well as self-sufficient VR glasses such as Oculus Quest does not record the statistics.

Category "unknown" is growing

In the monthly Steam usage figures, the category "unknown" increased by 0.08 percent, which corresponds to about 72,000 users. This category probably includes the new VR glasses Oculus Rift S and Valve Index.

Slight losses were suffered by HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality.

The following table translates the percentages from the Steam Hardware Survey into monthly active user counts on SteamVR. Serves as the underlying Valves statementthat about 90 million Steam users are active every month (as of October 2018). According to statistics, 1.09 percent of SteamVR users put on VR glasses in September.
